Katrina Kaif has lived in multiple countries before finally moving to Mumbai. She’s been all around the world, living in places like Japan, Hong Kong, France, Switzerland, London etc. Her parents got divorced when she was young and she has seven siblings. Her experience living in all of these places contributed to her rise first as a model, then as an actress, and now as a businesswoman.
She first started her modeling career at the age of fourteen, in London for a jewelry campaign. She exceled and then continued her career with the Models 1 Agency and had the opportunity to participate in London Fashion Week, and the La Senza and Arcadius House campaigns.
Her exposure to the movie industry started when director Kaizad Gustad saw her at one of her fashion shows and cast her in the movie Boom. In India, Kaif also received numerous modelling opportunities and made a successful career for herself. However, in the cinema industry, many filmmakers were nervous to cast her because of her inability to speak Hindi proficiently. Nonetheless, Director K. Vijaya Bhaskar took a chance and cast her opposite of famous actor Venkatesh Daggubati in the Telugu film Malliswari. It was a whopping hit and opened the doors for Kaif again in Bollywood. She received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress because of her excellent and highly praised performance in the film New York. Kaif now has a successful career in the cinema industry as well, and is currently filming Jee Le Zaraa alongside worldwide phenomenon Priyanka Chopra, and Alia Bhatt.

In my past post, I talked about Falguni Nayar, the creator of Nykka, an Indian e-commerce company that sells beauty, fashion, and wellness products. Katrina Kaif’s brand Kay Beauty which was launched in October 2019, is solely found on Nykka and has worked with Nykka from the very start.
Kay Beauty is a large brand with numerous products for all different purposes of beauty. There are 48 shades of lip crayons themselves, showcasing the immense depth and vision that Kaif envisions for the company and the makeup products they wish to promote.

The name of the company was decided as that’s the nickname Kaif’s friends call her and also means ‘being yourself.’ The letter K is important to the brand, and the three principles of Kay Beauty are: Kolor, Kover, and Kare. Paired with the importance of being yourself, being wild and free, and self-love, Kay Beauty has a wide range of products and is a very successful brand.
I think that the fundamental concept that the brand promotes is very healthy and inspirational. As an actress in India’s most loved industries and a country of over a billion people, Kaif is truly a role-model to a lot of young women. Most importantly, I love that her life experiences have shaped her to build her character and stand strong even despite facing failure in the early stages. Moving at a young age without a constant sense of ‘home’, is hard for any child, but I think that embracing the different thoughts and experiences that it can shape a person for is truly amazing. I appreciate the wide variety of colors in her palettes from eyes to lips, etc. because diversity in the makeup industry is really necessary.

I’ve talked about the importance of being both financially literate and independent especially for women is. I could not agree with this statement from Kaif more. As a South-Asian women in business with numerous successes in life, I hope that she can be an inspiration for every women reading. Don’t put yourself in a situation where you have to depend on others. Your safety, independence, and self-worth are super important and should be taken very seriously.
